YES, there is such a thing as De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde Culture and we hold the water, from which reflects our cognizance that such culture really exists, in our hands. Together with my partner, Jelome Ray Cruz, we took time to go around our three campuses, that is, CSB Main, Angelo King International Center (AKIC), and School of Design and Arts (SDA) to prove our belief. And as we traveled further we did recognize deeper the culture that is uniquely CSB. We realized in the end that DLS-CSB Culture will impossibly be recognized if the three campuses are severed from each other. Though geographically they are apart, inside a true-blooded Benildean’s mind, the invisible thread of this unique culture brightly surfaces. And it could be as strong as Spidey’s web, could be invisible but undoubtedly invincible. Hence, only it will emerge, this uniquely CSB culture, after we experience the uniqueness of these three respective campuses of CSB.
CSB MAIN SUBCULTURE
Pretending as a HUBEORG Consultant
WHAT we observed about the students, most students really know how to unwind even after class or before their class. The space of hallways provides them the comfortable environment. The open air as if gently blows away the stress that hangs in their head inside the classroom. We noticed also students here does know how to belong, to seek his or her company or group where he or she can feel comfortable as a way to escape or at least take a short respite before or after a mind-grueling lesson. Seldom can you see a student who has no company; you might spot someone alone but only a few. Here, with the company of his or her chum, he or she becomes almost the kind of person he or she is in his or her home, one becomes informal. One turns a bit humorous, laughs horribly, or is as if freed from prison. He or she finds safety in company of his or her circle of friends.
WHAT we observed about the teachers, every teacher show a different personality from others. They can be different in their way of teaching, some are energetic that they even jump form one side of a table to another, some are boring that students are sleeping unnoticed, in their way of talking to students inside or outside the classroom, some are serious as though they are still in class, some are like an ordinary individual, some are jolly and does not forget to spurt an incredible laughter, in their way of walking, some are robot-like, some are like ballerina dancing with butt protruding, who cares, duh? It just shows that teachers are like students. Everyone possesses a unique thumbprint. What the teachers have in common, I’m sure of this, is they teach the students how they can improve themselves academically or non-academically. It’s just that some of the students forget that it’s already time to learn and stop unwinding, haze in the head being blown away by the open air, the bell has rung, some of them still carefree, resulting to tardiness and sorts. Professors teach in a manner not a single peso of tuition fee will be frittered away.
WHAT we observed about the non-teaching staff, they know a job well done, that it is also their duty that defines what this campus is boasting in terms of cleanliness, order and discipline.

Watching for emotions
WE agree that emotions are indications of values, for emotions dictate what to be described about us, persons. Emotions are not fully expressed verbally, but better it can be when done non-verbally. Moreover, a documentary stated that 97% of what we intend to mean or what we want to express is showed non-verbally, where we do not have enough control. The remaining three is verbally expressed, yes, through words. Generally as CSB students, how do we behave, how do we react spontaneously when uncertainties attack us? Does it reflect what kind of individuals we truly are? Maybe. Maybe we can find another element or sign of CSB culture from there.
WE interviewed two students through Facebook about conflicts they faced and how they dealt with it.
A. What conflict have you experienced in the campus? Classroom? Office?
B. Who or what started the conflict? What could be the source?
C. How did you resolve the conflict?
From Dolphy, 3rd Year, BSBA-CA:
Interviewee: anung klaseng confilct?
Interviewer: nag-away, nakagalit
Interviewee: Nakakapikon haha pde baun?
Interviewer: oo oo. sino nampikon tangina
Interviewer: thanks
From DJ BJ, 3rd Year, BA-HRM:
Interviewee: classroom
Interviewer: ok ok
Interviewee: a. conflict is between a teacher and a student, sometimes teachers tend to make the issue more personal with regards to the students personal apearance, the teacher is being a stereotype
Interviewer: ok ok. sarili mo ba yang experience? ung naranasan talaga
Interviewee: b. both started the conflict because, if the student wants a good impression from the teacher, he/she must be pleasing. hence if the teacher too wants to be liked then the teacher should be more considerate because the teacher is in a higher position than the student. observation lang rj. Hahaha. c. resolving the problem, means that both must be considerate to each other
Interviewer: GALING MO TSONG,YAN ANG KAILANGAN KO haha. thanks thanks ok na.
Interviewee: ahahaha np
Observing common areas in the campus
WHAT we can say about the campus of CSB, it is worth studying in here given the prestige and glamour of the campus. The 100 image on the perforated surface clings us to as one of the 17 schools of La Salle Philippines. It gives us the pride that we study in a kind of school where our future is invested. Is there anybody who cannot be motivated to study and finish his or her course seeing this image?
Plaza Villarosa, otherwise known as Bora
ANYBODY who can’t be energized sitting under one of the cabañas? Wearing just my PE shorts while going to a mall bestows me enough “cool”-ness, how much more running over the surface where CSB name and logo and basketball team logo are painted upon?
The top floor, the best place to breathe out your stress and disappointment.
Br. Fidelis Leddy Learning Resource Center (Extension)
THE Br. Fidelis Leddy Learning Resource Center (LRC) is a multimedia library that supports the unique educational philosophy of DLS-CSB. Its resources vary widely in format: from the conventional printed materials, such as books and periodicals, to other forms of stored media, like cassette and video tapes, transparencies, compact discs, and other electronic/digital materials. The LRC also has up-to-date and well-maintained audio-visual equipment that assist and enhance learning processes in classroom environment.
LRC-Main is located on the second floor of Mutien Marie Hall, which faces the College’s main entrance.
LRC-Extension is located on the ground floor of the Taft campus, near Duerr Hall.
IT provides adequate and relevant learning materials in all available formats for research, instructional, informational, reference, and recreational needs and requirements of the students, faculty, and other college personnel. It designs, develops, implements, and continuously enhances an integrated library information system for easy retrieval of information stored in books and other learning materials.
(Source: DLS-CSB Br. Fidelis Leddy Learning Resource Center Handbook)
LRC is crowded during College Break or C-Break as we call it. Honestly, students this time, most of them are not really here to study but to let time pass by, usually with classmates. It happens because Taft campus or Main CSB lacks huge air-conditioned student lounge. This is the only place where we can cool ourselves. The library, though bombarded by students who go here not to study, implements strict rules. Thanks to LRC personnel who make the rules happen, those students who go here for serious study can still concentrate since LRC personnel gets the attention of those unruly students, they are asked to go outside if they can’t control their noises. Sleeping is also prohibited here. LRC personnel will wake you up, but you can still try and not get caught, as long as you take a nap where you cannot be easily seen. I tried that but I am afraid I will get caught later so I continued my nap at the cafeteria, second floor, there you can, nobody will wake you up, but only at a time when few people eat there.
STAYING there you can observe many students, from sexy chics, to fashion-inclined foreign students, to Deaf.
WHEN foreign students, like Koreans, are in a group, I find them amusing. The way they talk, though I don’t understand, I know the way they talk is similar to that of us; they also worry about their reports, their homeworks, and their projects. Maybe it’s just a matter of language. They act friendly together, similar to us. They also communicate through gestures with minimized words, sometimes I wonder how the other Korean understood what the other meant by uttering only a kind of a whimper for us Filipinos, I wonder if it’s already a word, maybe slang. But indeed they are communicating with one another.
PRETTY much similar with the group of Deaf, I am amazed by the way they communicate through body or sign language. I wonder sometimes if they also talk about normal people like us, you know tsismis, kind of, we just don’t notice perhaps. I wonder how they say obscene expressions or utterances like what we say in company of our friends. I am amused of their ability to communicate though they are distant with one another, of course without any electronic device but by mere sign language. Sometimes a thing about them enters my mind, I think they are lucky. They are lucky for by means of studying somebody’s actions even from a distance they already know what this person has in intention. They can hear the distinction between what is a lie and a truth. They are human lie detector. They can read your mind and know what you are up to. Such an amazing ability. In this world’s faces of infidelity, I admire their ability.

Watching for things that are not there
LOVE of words and depth. Probably this is something that is observed and yet not being talked about by students, teachers, and non-teaching personnel. The fact the school does not tolerate discrimination, that could be the reason. You know what I mean.
DEAF and us, Non-Deaf, we share a common craving. We endear words like no other. We just differ in ways we show depth. The former show it through actions, the latter show it verbally. That’s why word can never become a synonym for verbal. Words can be not obvious. The fact we are both Benildeans, we are both nationalistic, both responsible, both faithful, both competent, both appreciative and both CREATIVE, word is our best instrument to bridge those ideals or values.
WORD could sometimes be one of the things that we don’t see. And depth is the scale for its invisibility.
Walking in pursuit of Culture
WE took a walk around the campus main building and looked at some physical signs of culture.

THOUGH we have three campuses. DLS-CSB remains one and only one school who declares a MISSION-VISION statement as follows:
Saint Benilde Romançon Frame
Vision Statement
DE La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, a member of De La Salle Philippines, is a Catholic, dynamic, and innovative learning community. Guided by the Lasallian principles of Faith, Zeal in Service and Communion in Mission, it recognizes the uniqueness of every individual and responds to the diverse needs of all learners.
Mission Statement
AT De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, we believe that it is in community that we create and nurture a learning climate promoting success through mutual support and respect for all learners. As a learner-centered institution, we recognize diversity by addressing various needs, interests and cultures.
AS a community of students, faculty, staff and administrators, we strengthen our relationships through transformational experiences guided by appreciation of individual worth, creativity, professional competence, social responsibility, a sense of nationhood, and our faith.
WE actively anticipate and respond to individual, industry, and societal needs by offering innovative and relevant programs that foster holistic human development.
THE culture we sought, you might not see it but stronger as Spidey’s web it could become, in such a manner that you yourself cannot get out from being stuck in the web, and hopefully would equip us, you and me, the necessary values we need in the near future, in the workplace that we will be getting in. We felt a strong debt of gratitude for our professor in Human Behavior in Organization, Mr. Erwin Cuevas, for giving us the opportunity to appreciate more and deeper our school’s culture. As a matter of fact, it set our Benildean values ablaze again. Thanks a lot, Sir!
